March 14, 2008 MMC Receives Grant for Millponds Project
Mountain Meadows Conservancy (MMC) has received a grant from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy to create a how-to guide for the reuse of former lumber mill sites throughout the Sierra Nevada.
When completed, the guide will be used by MMC to begin initial planning for the reuse of the former Red River Lumber Company mill site, located between Westwood and Pinetown.
The site, known locally as the millponds, is used by locals for hiking, fishing, hunting and riding off-road vehicles. The site also consists of extensive wetlands that attract a wide array of bird species.
Maija West, a native of Westwood who now works as a land use consultant in Taos, New Mexico, will coordinate the project research and write the guide. According to West, many communities have not developed plans to revitalize old lumber mill sites because the issues are complex. West will look at ways other communities have managed former lumber mill sites. She will also examine some of the issues landowners face, develop lists of State and Federal resources that are available and discuss how best to get the community involved so reuse plans suit local needs.
The grant was made possible through passage of Proposition 84, which established the Sierra Nevada Conservancy to fund projects that improve California''s water quality. Many of the Sierra''s old lumber mill sites are located in the headwaters of California rivers. The Red River Lumber Company in Westwood was built at the eastern most tributary of the north fork of the Feather River.
West plans to complete the project by December 2009. She will conduct stakeholder meetings as well as public information meetings in Westwood. Once completed the guide will be distributed in print or online.
